One route for Rocky Peak Ridge is to start from the east at the US 9 trailhead, going up and over Blueberry Cobbles, then Bald Peak and then along the open ridge to the summit. This trail is LIT. You can access the Rocky Ridge Trail from Forest Road 80 or from junctions with the Raven Ridge Trail, Blackbird Knob Trail, Harman Trail, Big Stonecoal Trail and the Breathed Mountain Trail. The full Rocky Ridge Trail begins at Valle Vista Staging Area and is 6.15 miles long one way, so I prefer to start at Rancho Laguna Park, making it 3.8 miles one way and 7.6 roundtrip (if you go to the end). At 0.7 miles we came across the washbowl, a small pond where the trail skirts around shortly before heading up hill again. I highly recommend ankle supporting hiking boots, and plenty of water! On the outbound trip, you’re facing east and mostly see the bare west-facing hillsides rising up directly in front of you; on the return trip, you mostly see the wooded east-facing hillsides, and since you’re descending, there are more panoramic vistas of the area.
