My knees were extremely angry after slamming down on them for most the decent. We made the summit at 11:30 and it was a sheet of ice. Even with microspikes, I fell twice (hard) and had about a dozen near falls. I saw no trailblazing on the hike down. North trail much steeper than South trail - nice views in the fall. The real challenge as always comes past Phelps bridge and up to Indian Falls. Recommend you camp at Marcy Dam. The trail is fairly easy until you get to the final portion (where you turn right/West to the summit). Beautiful views right near the top, just hang left to the open field. Steep as well. and Mt. Be sure to tread lightly, though, as Marcy is home to endangered alpine vegetation. It would have taken a long time and was very tedious to make it to the top that way. Only an hour away, so off I went. be sure your boots are completely waterproof before making this climb! some of the hike is up through a riverbed where some spots had broken or slushy water/ice areas. That being said, there isn't any exposure on this trail...and it's not like you could kill yourself...but you certainly could get some nasty cuts and bruises (at best) or a broken limb (at worst). My dog enjoyed it too! 19 designated campsites in the area and 4 lean-tos. It was colder for sure on the summit base but manageable, and wind was moderate, the main issue was the lack of orientation and unsure footing due to heavier than expected snow cover on the ground and snow drifts. Also there are two trees down on the trail, both you have to step over. I could see maybe about 25 feet ahead but the mountain being entirely snow covered made the ground and the horizon blend into one whiteness, with snow still falling and whirling around, it was hard to distinguish the ground/rocks. Left the Loj parking lot around 7:30 AM, Indian falls by 9:45 and reached the summit by 11:30. Many of which require no technical skill or equipment to climb. I was concerned about the temperature and the wind, neither of which proved to be a problem. It was 4 hours and 47 minutes up, and 4 hours and 49 minutes down. We were first on the trail at 10am and had an easy hike to the lookout which was steep for last section. Gorgeous hike once you get to the top. From Indian Falls until the base of the summit by the wooden planks and alpine zone sign, it was fine footing, packed snow trail and generally under a foot of power everywhere else. In addition to the views and the great short hiking experience, there are three geodetic markers at the summit, and the base of a tower which was used for postal airplane navigation during the 1930's and 40's. Well worn path, steady incline. the south trail on the way down had several switchbacks and was wide. It’s located between two homes so it’s not very wide. I didn't have poles to steady and feel around and regretted it. This is the big one! Nice trail. It has been dry so the trail conditions were solid but I could see them getting slippery if it had just rained.
