Rocky Peak Ridge Bushwhack(Giant Mountain Wilderness-Adirondacks) Just east of Giant Mountain sits Rocky Peak Ridge, which rises to a lofty elevation of 4420 feet and is the 20th highest of the Adirondack High Peaks. My buddy Jim and I had been eyeballing another, much more interesting and challenging route. The Ridge Trail climbs quickly and steadily to Giant Mountain (4,626 feet) via the Washbowl, a small pond less than a mile from the trailhead. Few who have climbed Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant from New Russia would dispute that it's one of the best hikes in the Adirondacks. Rocky Peak, while above 4,000 feet, does not count as a 46er given that its prominence is not great enough to distinguish it as a unique peak. I'm not sure why. Finally, after 3.2 hours of hiking, I reached the wiiiindy summit. Interested hikers can continue over to Rocky Peak Ridge from a trail just below Giant's summit. She is a good running companion who keeps pace easily enough on three to five mile runs. Again, this is one of the better marked trails in the Adirondacks. The ridge led to the base of Giant, and the climbing was very very steep and difficult, often straight up slides. Giant of the Valley and Rocky Peak Ridge are fun mountains. We hiked down the back side of Giant and across the ridge before starting the ascent to Rocky Peak Ridg e. The back side of Giant is somewhat steep, be careful. Like the summit of Giant Mountain, it is open rock with 360 degree views of the surrounding area. The Zander Scott trail offers spectacular views of the Adirondacks over nearly it's entire distance. It was steep, wet, and fun. The ascent of Giant from Rocky Peak Ridge certainly lived up to my fears, and there were a few stretches where I was just managing to put one foot in front of (or above) the other. The 10 mile trail over Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant includes 5300' of climbing, and 9500' for the 20 mile round trip. It was steep, wet, and fun. The views are some of the nicest I’ve yet seen. This trail can get busy but on this day we had the place to ourselves. It was not easy but there were a lot of vistas where you will be happy to stop and catch your breath. At an elevation of 4,626 feet, Giant Mountain sits at number 12 on the Adirondack 46er Peak List – right behind Colden and just ahead of Nippletop.
